Bryce Harper – Baseball Role Model at 17

At 6 foot 3 inches and 205 lbs, high-school baseball player Bryce Harper is by no means small. However, this does not keep young future baseball starts from admiring him. “He is very inspirational,” says one Little Leaguer, “he makes me feel like I can do impossible things." When looking at this, why does this child look up to him? Right now, Bryce Harper will be the number one draft pick in the 2010 Major league Baseball Draft by the Washington Nationals and be part of the select few who will play professional baseball at the age of 17.

There is much more this young man can do; Bryce Harper is already hitting home runs that are setting records. A 502 foot home run was hit by Bryce Harper at the International Power Showcase that promotes the top baseball prospects, Bryce being the top. Bryce got an the cover of Sports Illustrated for hitting an 570 foot home run and being a great role model. Harper is becoming quite popular with middle and high-school students, even gaining support from some parents of young baseball players. This support is despite Harper’s decision to drop out of high school two years early, in order to train for the 2010 baseball season. The Major League Baseball rules state that every baseball player needs to have a GED or high school diploma, Bryce Harper received his in the summer of 2009.

The baseball bat of Bryce Harper started at the age of three. All over the country, Little League teams were offering to pay for his airfare and hotel, for him to play for them and that was at the age of eight. The people who knew Bryce from his childhood, knew he was going to accomplish the impossible. Harper’s natural skill with the sport of baseball is undoubtedly incredible, and could be called a “once in a generation” genetic lottery.

In addition to being a role model based on skills alone, Bryce Harper also possesses a determination and dedication to the sport of baseball that should be admired even by veteran players. The perseverance of Harper's heart is that of old-school baseball players; he wants to do his best and play to win. Bryce Harper's parents did not do any excessive pushing of baseball with their son at a young age. The unwavering father of Bryce, Ron, demands this.

“We have to do what’s best for Bryce. He just wants to play baseball. Bryce Always has. We need to do what is best for Bryce and his future; that is the number one thing that is guiding us.”

It could be said that a lot of Bryce Harper’s admirable characteristics come from his supportive family. Bryce's family has given a support system that is second to none because everyone needs a strong support system. There are a lot of activities that Bryce Harper does outside of baseball such as snowboard, play football and do other activities any kid his age does. His parents still think he is a normal kid even though he discontinued playing football. Bryce Harper has everything a strong future role model needs such as an amazing gift at baseball, untouchable achievements and determined attitude.
